There is a nucleus in the brain called the lateral habenula, also referred to as the “anti-reward center”. It’s called this because after a certain amount of trauma or ongoing appointments, the lateral habenula will go into “bust mode” – which eventually shuts down our Dopamine production, leaving us feeling tired, unmotivated, and unable to find joy in activities or life. Ketamine blocks this “bust mode” and turns the Dopamine production back on nearly immediately. When burst firing stops, we begin to feel relief, joy, and attitude.
